Section 1

What Is FluentLoop?

FluentLoop is a free, web-based speech practice application for children and teenagers who stutter. It is available at fluentloopai.com and works instantly on any device, iPhone, Android, iPad, laptop, or desktop computer, with no download, no account creation, and no cost.

FluentLoop gives children a safe, private space to practice real conversations. The user listens to what a simulated conversation partner says, records their spoken response, and receives AI-powered feedback on their speech. The entire experience is designed to build confidence and reduce speaking anxiety through repeated, low-stakes practice.

In Simple Terms

FluentLoop is like a practice room for speaking. Just as a musician practices scales before a concert, a child who stutters can practice ordering food, introducing themselves, or answering questions in FluentLoop before facing those situations in real life. The app listens, analyzes, and gives personalized feedback, all privately on the device.

Section 2

The Problem We Are Addressing

Stuttering is far more common than most people realize, and its impact on children's lives extends well beyond speech.

Key Facts About Stuttering

70 MillionPeople worldwide stutter, 1% of the entire global population.
5% of ChildrenStutter at some point during their development.
Ages 2 to 5The most common age when stuttering first appears.
75% Can RecoverWith proper early support and practice.
3× More BoysStutter compared to girls, though girls are less likely to recover naturally.
6 to 12 MonthsAverage wait time for a first speech therapy appointment in many areas.

The Emotional and Social Impact

  • Children who stutter are significantly more likely to experience bullying at school.
  • Many avoid raising their hand in class, answering the phone, or speaking to strangers.
  • Social anxiety and low self-esteem are common and can persist into adulthood.
  • People who stutter are frequently and incorrectly perceived as less intelligent or confident.
  • Avoiding speaking opportunities can limit educational and career prospects.

The Practice Gap

Professional speech therapy is the recommended treatment for stuttering. However, most children receive one or two therapy sessions per week, each lasting 30 to 60 minutes. This leaves more than 160 waking hours each week with no structured speaking practice.

What FluentLoop Addresses

FluentLoop does not replace professional speech therapy. It fills the gap between sessions by giving children a free, structured, AI-powered way to practice speaking every day. It is designed to complement what a speech-language pathologist teaches in the clinic, giving children a way to apply those techniques at home through realistic conversation practice.

Section 3

How FluentLoop Works, Step by Step

Here is a complete walkthrough of the FluentLoop experience, written so anyone can understand it without technical knowledge.

1

Enter Your Name

When a user opens fluentloopai.com, they see a welcome screen asking for their first name. This name is used only to personalize the experience throughout the session. The name exists only in the device's temporary memory and disappears completely when the session ends or the browser is closed. Nothing is saved.

2

See an Affirmation

Before practice begins, the user sees a random motivational message such as "Your voice matters" or "Courage is speaking anyway." Emotional preparation before speaking reduces anxiety and helps with fluency. The affirmation rotates randomly from 8 different messages.

3

Optional Breathing Exercise

The user is offered a guided 1.5-minute breathing exercise before starting. The screen shows an animated circle with the pattern: Inhale for 4 seconds, Hold for 4 seconds, Exhale for 6 seconds. This is the 4-4-6 diaphragmatic breathing technique recommended by speech-language pathologists to reduce vocal tension before speaking.

4

Choose a Difficulty Level

  • Little Ones (Ages 4 to 7): 2 to 3 exchanges, very simple answers.
  • Easy (Ages 7 and up): 3 to 4 exchanges covering everyday situations.
  • Moderate: 5 to 7 exchanges including phone calls and meeting new people.
  • Hard: 8 to 9 exchanges including presentations and job interviews.
  • Advanced: 10 to 12 exchanges including college admissions interviews.
5

Pick a Scenario and Practice

The user selects a real-world scenario and the app displays what the conversation partner says, personalized with their name, for example: "Hey Sriram! How are you doing today?" The user taps the microphone, a 3-2-1 countdown appears, and they record their response. They see a tip for guidance and tap Next to continue.

6

AI Analyzes the Speech

After completing all exchanges, recordings are sent to OpenAI Whisper for transcription. The transcripts go to GPT-4o-mini for analysis. The user sees a live progress indicator: "Transcribing exchange 1 of 6… exchange 2 of 6…" so they always know what is happening.

7

View Scores and Feedback

The user receives an overall percentage score, a letter grade from A to D, five detailed metric scores, and one personalized encouraging sentence written specifically for their session.

8

Review the Transcript

The user can tap "Review What I Said" to see a complete transcript of the entire conversation, what the app said and exactly what words the user spoke in each exchange.

9

Get Inspired

At the end of the score screen there is a link to a real video of a person who stutters speaking with courage and confidence, to inspire the user and build identity pride.

Section 4

Difficulty Levels and Content

LevelAge RangeExchangesExample Scenarios
Little OnesAges 4 to 72 to 3What is your name? / Do you like food? / How are you feeling?
EasyAges 7+3 to 4Meeting a friend / Ordering at McDonald's / Talking to a neighbor
ModerateAges 10+5 to 7Making a new friend / Ordering pizza by phone / Returning a purchase
HardAges 13+8 to 9Class presentation Q&A / Job interview / Doctor appointment
AdvancedAges 15+10 to 12College admissions interview / Public speech Q&A / Support group

Name Personalization in Conversations

Every conversation prompt in FluentLoop uses the user's name naturally. For example, if the user's name is Sriram:

App says to user
Hey Sriram! How are you doing today?
User records
I am doing really well, thank you!
App says to user
Did you finish your homework, Sriram?
User records
Yes I finished it last night.
Section 5

AI Speech Analysis

FluentLoop uses two industry-leading AI services from OpenAI to analyze the user's speech. Here is exactly what happens:

Transcription with OpenAI Whisper

After the user finishes all exchanges, each audio recording is sent to OpenAI Whisper, the same speech recognition technology used in medical, legal, and research applications worldwide. Whisper converts the spoken audio into written text, capturing exactly what the user said.

Analysis with GPT-4o-mini

The transcribed text is analyzed by GPT-4o-mini which evaluates five speech dimensions, returning numeric scores plus a personalized encouraging sentence written specifically for that session.

MetricWhat It MeasuresGood Score Direction
Stutter CountNumber of detected stutter eventsLower is better (0 to 10)
SeverityHow intense each stutter wasLower is better (0 to 100)
ClarityHow clearly and understandably they spokeHigher is better (0 to 100)
Speech PaceWhether speaking speed was appropriateHigher is better (0 to 100)
Speech TensionEstimated vocal tension in the voiceLower is better (0 to 100)

Important Note on AI Scoring

The AI provides scores based on the transcribed text. It is designed to be encouraging and supportive, not clinical or diagnostic. The scores are a practice tool to motivate improvement, not a medical assessment. FluentLoop always recommends that families work with a licensed speech-language pathologist for professional evaluation and treatment.

Section 6

Privacy and Data Safety

Because FluentLoop is used by children as young as 4, privacy is the highest priority. The application was built from the ground up with a zero-data architecture.

What FluentLoop Does NOT Collect

  • No names, stored only in temporary browser memory, erased when session ends.
  • No audio recordings, processed and permanently deleted immediately after scoring.
  • No scores or session history, nothing is saved between sessions.
  • No location data, never requested or accessed.
  • No cookies or tracking, no analytics, advertising, or tracking technology.
  • No accounts or passwords, there is no login system.
  • No personal information of any kind from any user.

Exactly How Audio Is Handled

  1. The user records their spoken response.
  2. The audio is stored temporarily in the device's own RAM only.
  3. When the user finishes, audio is sent to OpenAI Whisper for transcription.
  4. Whisper returns the text of what was spoken.
  5. The text is analyzed by GPT-4o-mini which returns the scores.
  6. The original audio is immediately and permanently deleted.
  7. Scores are displayed on screen and never stored anywhere.

COPPA Compatibility

The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) restricts what online services can collect from children under age 13. FluentLoop is fully compatible with COPPA requirements because it collects absolutely no personal information from any user of any age. There is nothing to protect because nothing is ever gathered.

For Speech-Language Pathologists

FluentLoop is safe to recommend to patients in a clinical setting. No patient information is exposed, stored, or transmitted. No audio recordings are retained after scoring. There is no way to link any session to a specific individual. The application operates in fully anonymous mode by design.

Section 7

Clinical and Research Foundation

Every design decision in FluentLoop is grounded in peer-reviewed stuttering research. Below are the six key studies that form the scientific basis of the application.

Reference 1: Early Intervention in Childhood Stuttering
Yairi and Ambrose (2013)
Journal of Fluency Disorders, 38(2), 66-82
Relevance: Proves that early intervention before age 6 leads to significantly higher recovery rates. This is the basis for FluentLoop's support of children starting at age 4 with the Little Ones level.
Reference 2: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Stuttering
Menzies, Onslow, Packman and O'Brian (2009)
Journal of Fluency Disorders, 34(3), 187-201
Relevance: Shows that reducing speaking anxiety through repeated low-stakes practice is one of the most effective approaches for adolescent stutterers. This is the core principle behind all of FluentLoop's conversation scenarios.
Reference 3: Diaphragmatic Breathing and Speech Fluency
Guitar (2014)
Stuttering: An Integrated Approach to Its Nature and Treatment. Lippincott Williams and Wilkins
Relevance: Establishes diaphragmatic breathing as a core technique for reducing laryngeal tension before speaking. This is the direct clinical basis for FluentLoop's pre-session 4-4-6 breathing exercise.
Reference 4: Easy Onset and Fluency Shaping Techniques
Shapiro (2011)
Stuttering Intervention: A Collaborative Journey to Fluency Freedom. Pro-Ed
Relevance: Clinical evidence for easy onset, slow speech, and voluntary stuttering as effective techniques. These are all covered in FluentLoop's Speaking Tips section.
Reference 5: Neural Basis of Developmental Stuttering
Chang and Zhu (2013)
Journal of Neuroscience, 33(4), 1600-1616
Relevance: Brain imaging research showing that stuttering involves structural and functional differences in white matter connectivity. This supports the educational content explaining that stuttering is neurological, not behavioral.
Reference 6: Technology-Assisted Speech Therapy Outcomes
Rangarathnam et al. (2016)
American Journal of Speech-Language Pathology, 25(3), 295-305
Relevance: Demonstrates comparable outcomes between technology-assisted speech practice and in-person therapy sessions. This directly validates digital tools like FluentLoop as legitimate supplemental practice platforms.
